Guided Reading, Third Grade Session 3 Making Meaning with Informational Text AMAZING SALAMANDERS
Session 3 is very similar to Session 2, beginning with a discussion of strategies used during the first two sessions with the book. Students continue working to explain their thinking fully to the group by noting what in the text supports their thinking.
Session 3 includes reading and discussing Chapter 4. Students continue to work to integrate running text and photographs and other graphics to fully understand the key concepts and to justify their thinking by noting what in the text supports their ideas. A challenge emerges with this chapter as students discuss how subheadings relate back to the bigger heading; rather than just noticing the information in the section, a reader needs to connect back to the bigger understanding provided by the main chapter heading. Students prepare to read the final chapter independently away from the group.
